Solidarity donations by Openbank customers up 25% in 2022, exceeding €5 million

02/20/2023

Customers of Openbank, the 100% digital bank of the Santander Group, donated over €5 million to charitable causes supported by the bank in 2022. This figure, which is up 25% on the previous year, has been achieved thanks to the tremendous commitment shown to the different projects the bank supports through its solidarity marketplace, now including 50 NGOs.

The bank has raised €18 million since the initiative was launched and the number of customers supporting these causes has increased year on year. In 2022 alone, it saw a 14% increase in the number of customers contributing to the four major causes the bank supports: disease research, support for children, the fight against poverty and for integration, and aid to conflict-affected regions. These projects are all included in the solidarity marketplace created by the bank in 2018, which is available in all European countries where the bank currently operates. It became particularly relevant last year due to the war in Ukraine, providing humanitarian aid and support for refugees.

This platform allows any customer who wants to support these organisations to join the cause in a simple and secure way, donating either directly by bank transfer or by paying with the Solidarity Debit Card, which rounds up purchase amounts to the nearest euro.

Turkey-Syria earthquake victim support

Openbank has just launched a campaign to facilitate donations to help victims of the devastating earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria on 6 February. Humanitarian aid is essential to carry out rescue efforts, provide medical care and support those in the affected areas.

Organisations working in the region include the Red Cross, Doctors of the World, UNHCR, Action Against Hunger and Save The Children. All these organisations are mobilising medical teams and are helping to transport those in need to hospital and to distribute food, warm clothing and sanitation and emergency kits. All these NGOs are included in the Open Solidarity programme, and all Openbank customers can make a one-off or regular donations through the Openbank website or app.

The bank will continue to add new NGOs and causes to this marketplace and will carry out specific campaigns on important dates, such as World Cancer Awareness Month or Solidarity Month. Furthermore, Openbank continues year after year to support the different projects undertaken by the Spanish Association of Children with Liver Diseases and Liver Transplants (HePA), and the Duchenne Parent Project España association, which fights Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophy.
