Openbank cuts fees on international transfers
18/07/2026
- The service is now available for instant cross-border payments using a mobile number, with no need for cards or an IBAN.
Openbank, Santander Group’s 100% digital bank, is expanding Bizum’s features and now allows its customers in Spain to send and receive money instantly to and from Portugal and Italy using just a mobile number, with no need for cards or traditional bank transfers (IBAN).
Thanks to its integration with Bancomat (Italy) and MB WAY (Portugal), Openbank customers can transfer money with the same ease and security as they currently do with Bizum in Spain: simply by selecting a contact from their phonebook and confirming the transaction in seconds.
This new service reinforces the bank’s commitment to innovation and the continuous improvement of the customer experience, while further strengthening its focus on Bizum as a key solution for enabling instant, secure cross-border payments.
Bizum, Bancomat and MB WAY are the leading mobile payment solutions in their respective countries, with more than 2 billion payments processed in 2024 (over half of which were made through Bizum), accounting for more than 65% of all instant payments in those markets.
In Spain, Bizum has more than 29 million users, 85,000 participating merchants and 12,000 active donation codes as of May 2025. Over the past year, users made close to one billion instant transfers through the platform, accounting for around 90% of all instant payments in the country.
